Local residents, families and community groups came together at Epping Boronia Park on Sunday for Christmas in the Park, a community celebration organised by local community organisation G’Day Neighbour, marking the festive season with connection, participation and recognition of public service.
Despite temperatures approaching 40 degrees, the event attracted strong community attendance, with residents enjoying live community performances, family-friendly activities and festive entertainment throughout the afternoon. The relaxed outdoor setting provided an opportunity for neighbours to connect, engage and celebrate together in an inclusive and welcoming environment.
The event was organised by Deputy Lord Mayor of City of Parramatta, Councillor Charles Chen, together with G’Day Neighbour, a community-based organisation committed to strengthening social connection and encouraging civic participation through grassroots initiatives and volunteer-led programs.
Says Cr Chen, “Community gatherings like this create opportunities for people to connect, to feel included and to build relationships,” Cr Chen said. “They are an important part of maintaining strong, connected and resilient neighbourhoods.”
A key feature of the event was the recognition of Ms Lorraine Wearne, in acknowledgement of her long-standing contribution to local government and public service.
Ms Wearne served 29 years in local government, including two terms as Lord Mayor of Parramatta. She was Parramatta’s first female Lord Mayor and also the first woman to hold the position across Greater Sydney, marking a significant milestone in local leadership.
Her contribution to local governance, community development and inclusive leadership was acknowledged by organisers and recognised by attendees, many of whom have been directly impacted by her decades of service to the local community.
The Christmas in the Park event featured a range of community-led performances, activities for children and families, and light refreshments, creating a festive atmosphere that encouraged participation across all age groups.
Since its establishment, G’Day Neighbour has delivered a variety of community programs and local initiatives aimed at fostering inclusion, strengthening social ties and supporting community-led engagement. The organisation works closely with volunteers, local residents and community partners to create accessible opportunities for participation.
Organisers said the “Christmas in the Park” event reflected G’Day Neighbour’s ongoing commitment to building strong local connections and recognising those who have made meaningful contributions to public life.
G’Day Neighbour reaffirmed its intention to continue working alongside the community to deliver future initiatives that support connection, participation and a strong sense of local belonging.
